Bently & M. Kretschmer, www.copyrighthistory.org Record Images Record-ID: d_1739 Full title Privilege granted by the Protestant Swiss Cantons to the Zurich-based publisher Bürckli regarding an edition of poems by Barthold Heinrich Brockes set to music by Johann Caspar Bachofen Full title original language N/A Abstract This privilege granted to the publisher J. H. Bürckli on 13 July 1739 by the mayors and councillors of the German-speaking Protestant Swiss Cantons is printed in a book with poems by Barthold Heinrich Brockes, who at the time was a highly popular poet from Hamburg. His collection "Earthly Delight in God, Consisting of Various Poems Drawn from Nature and Morality" ("Irdisches Vergnügen in Gott bestehend in verschiedenen aus der Natur und Sitten-Lehre hergenommenen Gedichten") was first published in Hamburg in nine parts between 1721 and 1748. The Zurich edition of 1739 contains a selection from the six parts that had been published by then. Not only the poems but also at least one of the copper prints was copied from the Hamburg edition. The image next to page 968 (see image 3) was anonymously re-engraved from a signed copper plate (Christian Fritzsch) which had been published at the beginning of Part 3 of the original edition of "Earthly Delight in God". New content was, however, provided in the form of various song-settings of the poems, composed for three (or two) vocal parts by the Zurich-based musician Johann Caspar Bachofen. The privilege bestows a 10-year period of protection and pronounces a ban on "any reprints of Brockes's poems with musical compositions, carried out wholly or partially, and in any other conceivable manner" ("Brockische Gedichte mit Musicalischen Compositionen, gantz oder Stück-weis, und überall auf was für Manier es seyn möchte, nachzudrucken"), as well as a ban on the import and sale of reprints made outside of the Protestant cantons. Apparently, this privilege covered not just text editions of Brockes's work, but also Bachofen's musical settings of these poems.
