Kretschmer, www.copyrighthistory.org Record Images Commentary Record-ID: f_1701 Full title Letters patent and decree of the King's Council of State for the regulation of the book trade Full title original language N/A Abstract Following the general rulings (arrêts) of 1665 and 1686, and coming before the Code de la librairie of 1723 (f_1723), the regulations of 1701 constituted a new important step towards the centralization of royal policy in the area of press control. Significantly, as a result of this piece of legislation - which remained a symbol of the lobbying power of the Parisian booksellers against their provincial counterparts - the flexibility which local authorities had until then had to authorize the circulation and publication of books was suppressed to the benefit of Paris.
