Citation: Confederate States of America Copyright Act (1861), Primary Sources on Copyright (1450-1900), eds L. Bently & M. Kretschmer, www.copyrighthistory.org Record Images Record-ID: us_1861 Full title An Act to secure copyrights to authors and composers Full title original language N/A Abstract The copyright statute of the Confederate States of America. The statute was very similar to the United States Copyright Act, except for its protection of foreign authors whose states supplied reciprocal protection to Confederacy citizens, and its prohibition on importation of works from states which did not have reciprocal protection. The commentary discusses the statute, public thought in the South about authorship and copyright, and southern attempts to use copyright as a vehicle for constructing a national identity and for creating legitimacy for the Confederacy.
