Hiermede zou ik mij uit den strijd terugtrekken, als de Heer Muller niet een klein nootje aan zijne beschouwing had toegevoegd. Daarin betreurt hij het -- en te recht -- als men over zaken schrijvende, elkander noodeloos verbittert, en dit zou ik gedaan hebben, blijkens de aanhaling mijner slotwoorden. Ik kan daarop eenvoudig antwoorden met eene verwijzing op hetgeen ik schreef. Niet den Heer Muller toch beschuldigde ik van vlagen van hooge moraliteit, maar de massa, die hij trachtte op te wekken. Ligt daarin eene geestigheid, of wat erger is eene mislukte geestigheid, ik weet het niet, maar aanleiding tot verbittering kan er, dunkt mij, niet in gevonden worden.
